Description

Gulliver’s Travels World Map

A world map assembled from the works of Herman Moll and Charles Brock by Karl David Brown (copyright Karl David Brown, 2010).
This map portays the world according to “Gulliver’s Travels”. The map has been carefully reconstructed using information from the novel. Herman Moll was the original cartographer for “Gulliver’s Travels” during the lifetime of Jonathan Swift and a respected mapmaker during the 18th century.
The map was produced for use with “Gulliver’s Trading Company”, a table top role playing game, but does not contain any elaborations not gleaned from Swift’s novel “Gulliver’s Travels” and would be of interest to scholars of Swift or fans of the original novel.
Gulliver’s Trading Company can be found on Scribd or its own site. A beta version of the game can be downloaded for free and comments from playtestering are sought.

Regarding Sumatra. Sumatra is not mentioned in the Lilliput part of the novel. An understandable confusion occurs because of Hermon Moll's map.  Lilliput is indeed south of Sumatra, way South. We know from the first few pages of the book that the ship is wrecked at around 30 degrees South latitude.  Towards the end of the Lilliput chapter Gulliver surmises he is to the North-East of Van Diemen's Land (Modern Tasmania). Furthermore Swift very carefully places all other imaginary lands within what were then blank spaces on the map, he too would not of put an island where the dry land of Australia was known to exist.
Lilliput is in the right place on the map.
